hmmm, where to begin??
i've been churning on this post in my mind for a while... like, for a few months really but i've never figured how i would start it. or even what to title it. craziness! it's part informative/part venting/part self-disclosure. funny how being a blogger still doesn't make self-disclosure any more comfortable for me!
ok so, around may of last year i made a rather big decision in my life: i decided that i would no longer chemically straighten / relax my hair. if your hair is nowhere near the excessively curly state that mine's is, you may be thinking, "and the big deal is....?" but to other people, this statement can elicit an audible gasp, an "Are you for real?", a "But why?", etc. see, it's a straight haired girl's world, for the most part. our society is heavily influenced by the european standards of beauty.
the problem is when a large group of people who have tightly curled hair {sorry, i've never been a fan of the word "nappy/knappy"} decide that they need to have straight hair because their hair isn't "good enough" or they do not possess the coveted "good hair" {loosely curled hair}. isn't it odd that my hair is called "natural hair" since i don't chemically straighten it but hair that has been chemically altered is just called "hair"? isn't that backwards?!
so i've pretty much always hated my hair. i've wanted to have hair like the little girl on the box of the Just For Me or PCJ hair relaxer kit, LOL! SOOO many black little girls wanted her hair! but alas, i wasn't born with "good hair" {i CRINGE every time i hear someone use that phrase}.
i've scoffed internally at preachers when they declare that hair is my glory. Glory?! umm... more like Shame! it's not growing so who cares if it's uncut? in actuality my hair was growing BUT it was breaking also so i could never retain length. thus, it never seemed to get any much longer.
so what spurred me?
- i was in a funk last year and i needed change. like, big time major change.
- i was kinda tired of going to the salon. seriously, i am hightailing it across town to go to your salon and i still have to sit and Wait for you even though i have an appointment? oh, and pay that much? um, no.
- a book i had picked up at west coast conference 2009 by Juli Jasinski called "Her Ebony Glory". i remember scoffing at the book when she began to talk about not relaxing our hair.
- my convictions. yep, i've had this nagging thought for a few years now but never did anything about it: if i shouldn't dye my hair because i'm changing it from my natural color, why should i relax it and change it from its natural texture?
so i took the plunge and let me tell you, it was one of the best decisions i have ever made. God is bringing me closer each and everyday to more self-acceptance. do i love my hair now? i'm getting there.... i'm not in love with my hair but i don't hate it anymore.... in fact, i like it now and THAT, my friends, is one giant leap for mankind. my hair is not bad hair, it is Good Hair because God made it and it was Good Enough for Him.
and besides, why would anyone argue against having heathly, strong hair with less breakage and more growth??? all to conform to society's beauty standards.
hair is a hot button issue among some for sure. what prompted me to write this today was a conversation i had last night. "so, you mean you're never relaxing your hair again?" nope. "well, what if you meet a guy and he won't marry you unless you relax your hair?"
um.... if i met a guy and he said, "you know, i really like you but you need to do something about that nose"
should jen run to her laptop and check out if her job's health insurance covers plastic surgery?? noooooo...
see, it's really sad but you'd be shocked to know how many people feel like the person in the above convo.
so, i try to brush off the ignorance. it's all i can do.
after all, i am good enough in His eyes, right?
{ i suppose it would seem fitting that i stick a picture in this post but i don't really have hair pics! and i'm sporting french braids today. so yeah. :) }

Okay, I obviously can't relate completely to this post ~ straight blond hair over here ~ but I do know hair is either a struggle or it's not.
I'm going to send you the CD from this past Sunday night. Our pastor preached about "Girl Power." His text was 1 Corinthians chapter 11 and I immediately thought "the hair chapter." But there was SO much more! I know I wouldn't do a good job explaining it all, so I'll just send it to you cause I love you!
Wow girl....great post!
awww, thank you Sis. Kathy! i love you too!
thank you, Brittney!
I loved this post. I can relate to everything you said. This is my second time growing my perm out and I have no intentions of going back.
Amen amen amen! Kudos for making that decision!
I love this quote here when you said, "it is Good Hair because God made it and it was Good Enough for Him."
I am totally saying "YEEEAAAHHH!!" and pumping my fist in the air to this (mentally bc I am at work lol) because that can easily be changed to:
"God made me the way I am and it was Good enough for Him."
God made me from my head to my toes; He knows the very core of my being. And besides that, He not only made me but He saved my soul!
He made us all look and act different for a reason! It's so easy to get sidetracked because of the pressure to look/act a certain way. (haha now I'm talking to my own way of thinking here) But hey, if everyone was the same, that'd be pretty boring. Diversity is a beautiful thing!
Hello, I am Amanda Torres, and I am a frizzy haired, gappy toothed, too smart for my own good sometimes Pentecostal Hispanic introvert, and God loves me the way I am!
And besides, who cares about jerkfaced vain guys (and *gasp* sometimes even girls) who are so concerned about the outward appearance that they won't bother to consider someone's personality/soul anyway? Psssh forget them! :D
yay Janeen!! :)
ms. Amanda, i Loved your "free to be me" post! soooo good!
I've been wearing my hair naturally for some years now. My hair is not long - remember who you are in God and who's you are.
That was an awesome post & I 100% respect and agree with your message & decision! Being someone with "tightly curled" hair :), I inwardly cringe when our type of hair is referred to in a condescending way, as if its somehow lacking or defected
but I thank God for people who have more understanding than that! We are all fearfully & wonderfully made in the image of God, curls and all! Thanks for stepping out and sharing.
By the way, my name is Hanna & I'm very good friends with Jen (Connell). I came across your blog through Jen's.
I'm glad I did :D
anon - you are so right!
hi hanna, nice to "meet" you! i'm sure that i've seen you at some conferences but we've never met in person. fearfully and wonderfully made.... amen!
Yay!!! Finally a Hair Blog. I'm so proud of you! Your decison to go natural was totally the will of God. It looks so much stronger and healthier. Although i'm not going natural, your still a motivation to me. Love ya! -Lyda
Jen I am so proud of you for this decision! It was a good day when we met through my blog. It has been amazing to see your hair progress- but even moreso glorious to see your confidence growing! It is NOT an easy decision to transition to being natural. But it is the best thing to do because our hair is just as good as anyone elses. Just so happens to be different. But different is good :)
I would LOVE to use this post for my blog. Let me know if thats okay with you <3
check out i wear natural apostolic hair

@Lyda - thank you, dear friend!
@Kendra - that's fine with me! thank YOU for your awesome blog!
Wow. So maybe I'm really late!
Jen, I love you and I'm proud of your decision because it was YOUR choice.
You are not the only one who cringes at the terms Bad Hair and Good Hair. I hate it and hate how society places people in categories based on hair type. (body type, skin type, etc. The list can go on and on. Humans are so loving, eh?)
I think the term "nappy" though is hilarious! Because I often am nappy. *snickers* Just playing the devil's advocate here. ;)
Question. Do you think that perming hair is always a "vanity" thing (speaking of your European comment)?
Thank you for the post, dahling. I love you!
hahaha! we were both cringing last night!! i had no idea we sharing mutual discomfort!
pardon me for going all "armchair psychologist" :) but i see it like this: we're basically conditioned to hate our hair at a very young age. it came from family, images, and in the church. we're unconsciously taught that it's not fair that we were born with glossy straight/wavy hair. our mom's fussed about our hair, instilling in us that we needed a perm since it isn't "manageable" on it's own.
anything can be a vanity issue but i feel it's deeper than that (for many, not all). i feel that it's a need to feel accepted in the world. only recently having i begun to see natural hair like Crazy. i had no idea a "hair revolution" was going on when i decided to stop relaxing! but before that, you just didn't see it! and i believe that humans are strongly influenced by what we see.
JEN!!!!!! I am sooooo proud of you for making this decision!!! AND just for the record, I happen to LOVE "tightly curled hair!" I know, I know big surprise right? ;) LOL Honestly, I REALLY do think its beautiful!!! I love touching all the girls hair and playin with it and to me it is actually easier to do. Ironically, before I had read this post, I had just told the girls in my youth group, cuz I had just seen Kendra at Youth Alive, that one think I REALLLY liked and admired about Kendra is that she isn't scared to be just be black. You would think that with her being married to a white guy, that she of all people would try to have straight hair... BUT... She isn't scared of her hair. She wasn't scared of it not being all straight, she wasn't scared to have braids or twists or whatever and I REALLLY like that!!! I mean she came in with these cool lookin twists and rolls in her hair that obviousley no white girl would ever be doing, but on her hair it looked AWESOME!!! (Btw- you all better NOT laugh at me, BUT I did try to do one of Kendra's hair-do's one time. It didn't work at to well either...let me tell you!!! I told my sister...it didn't work out like Kendra's and she just looked at me and was all like...DUH!!!) So anyways, I'm really happy for you and proud of you!!! Btw- what do you guys think about hot sticks and hotrollers and curling irons? Do you think that is the same thing as when a girl gets her hair straightened? Its something that I think about from time to time and would be interested in hearin what you all think! ♥luv you much grande and I had better be seeing and meeting you SOOOON!!! Xoxo
♥Mary :)
Sorry Mary, but I did laugh! :) Too cute!
I am not totally against heat but I know it can be damaging with constant use so I rarely use it. I curl wet hair with rollers and those odd looking things called flexirods. Then I sit under a hair dryer just to dry it some and then let it air dry throughout the rest of the night. That's the most heat I use and it's not really a lot.
Some naturals straighten their hair all the time and I kinda do equate that to having a relaxer. There might be less damage but I don't think hair is reaching its potential when it's constantly being heated up.
I have to also interject that the less curl that a hair has, the less fragile it is! You are more likely to be able to deal with heat better than I!
