i must explain….. see, i don’t just like storms. i LOVE a good storm. bring on the thunder and lightening and torrential rains. i see it as an awesome display of power from on high. or if you will, “God strutting His stuff”!
i’m the weirdo who, when there was a tornado warning at a previous office, reluctantly left her cubicle seat by the window to be corralled by the HR lady into a stuffy room without a view. i enjoy sitting in the backyard to watch a storm unfold. even my dear friend and i occasionally call each other if there is a good, powerful storm.
i must confess though…. storms of the spiritual variety are definitely not encountered with such zeal.
i am skeptical of those who say that they enjoy the storms and trials in life. i fail to see any pleasure in chaos, heartbreak, and pain. happiness while watching everything around you unravel at the seams.
but what is the result of the natural storm? yes, there is some destruction and devastation left in its wake. but it also brings life. it waters the crops. it feeds the lakes. it breaks dead branches so that new ones may spring forth.
the life storms have a way of feeding us spiritual. we become thirsty for more of God. we spend more time on our knees in humility. we are broken in order to walk in newness of life.
some old song lyrics that i love:
Sometimes He calms the storm
With a whispered peace be still
He can settle any sea
But it doesn't mean He will
Sometimes He holds us close
And lets the wind and waves go wild
Sometimes He calms the storm
And other times He calms His child
